Why Choose the 3M™ IJ680 + 580C Laminated Solution?

This dual-layer system is recognized as the gold standard in the rail transit industry, specifically engineered to handle complex body panels, rivets, and corrugated train exterior panels:

Base Layer: 3M™ IJ680 Industrial Reflective Film

  • Slideability & Positionability: Features slideable, air-release pressure-activated adhesive allowing effortless position adjustments during installation, drastically reducing application scrap.

  • Ultra-High Conspicuity: Features a 7 mil thickness with a typical retro-reflection coefficient of 100, maintaining extreme visual warning performance in dark subways, tunnels, and open-air night operations.

  • Transit-Optimized Base: Officially recommended for subways, light rails, trams, express trains, and municipal buses.

Overlaminate Layer: 3M™ 580C Commercial Reflective Protective Film

  • Enhanced Protection: Serves as a protective overlaminate that reinforces scratch resistance and chemical corrosion protection against industrial washing agents.

  • High-Index Optical Beads: Embedded with imported high-index glass beads for superior night-time reflection and excellent ink adhesion for multi-color screen and digital printing.

  • 8-Year Outdoor Service Life: Engineered to deliver reliable durability for up to 8 years under severe outdoor operating environments.

Installation & Surface Application Guide

Special Notice: For specialized rail transit vehicle installations (such as curved bodies or surfaces with rivets), please contact our customer service team for detailed technical guidance.

1. Tool Preparation

Assemble the following tools prior to installation:

  • Spray bottle (filled with clean water + a few drops of neutral mild soap)

  • 3M PA-1 Plastic Squeegee or soft felt-edge squeegee

  • Lint-free microfiber towels

  • Precision utility knife

  • Portable heat gun or hairdryer (low heat setting)

  • Rivet punch/cutting tool (if installing over rivets)

  • Surface cleaner (Neutral cleaner, Isopropyl Alcohol - IPA, or 3M Prep Solvent 70)

2. Step-by-Step Installation Procedure

  1. Environmental Assessment: Ensure ambient and substrate temperatures are between 10°C and 38°C. If temperatures fall below 10°C, use a portable heater to warm the substrate. Avoid installing during high winds, direct scorching heat, or rain/snow.

  2. Surface Cleaning: Wash the installation panel with water and detergent to remove oil, dust, and grime. Rinse thoroughly with clean water. Deep-clean using Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) or 3M Prep Solvent 70 on lint-free towels, then dry completely.

  3. Wet Lubrication Spray: Evenly mist the vehicle surface with the diluted soapy water solution. This prevents immediate bonding and allows effortless graphic positioning.

  4. Positioning: Peel off the release paper, align the reflective sticker onto the wet surface. The slideable feature of 3M IJ680 allows smooth position adjustments.

  5. Squeegee Water & Air Displacement: Sweep firm, overlapping strokes using a 3M PA-1 squeegee from the center outward to displace all water and air. Integrated air-release channels facilitate complete bubble removal.

  6. Rivet Handling (If Applicable): When applying over rivets, use a rivet punch tool to slice the film around the rivet base, then squeegee firmly down surrounding edges.

  7. Heat Setting & Trimming: Gently warm corners and edges with a heat gun set to low temperature to soften the film and press down firmly. Trim any excess edges using a precision knife.

  8. Curing Window: Allow the installed graphic to cure in a clean environment. Do not wash the vehicle, expose to rain, or apply chemical cleaners for 24 hours post-installation.

Troubleshooting & Important Precautions

Issue

Primary Cause

Recommended Solution

Low Temperature Installation

Ambient temperature below 10°C

Pre-heat substrate and film with a portable heat gun above 10°C prior to application.

Film Stretching Distortion

Forcible pulling or stretching during squeegeeing

Do not forcibly stretch the film, as it damages retro-reflective performance and causes edge lifting.

Trapped Air Pockets

Incomplete water or air displacement

Puncture the bubble center with a fine needle tip and squeegee flat; do not tear cured film.

Cleaning Maintenance

Use of harsh acid or alkaline washing solutions

Wash graphics using soft microfiber towels and neutral detergents only.
